A clogged vape pen is a common frustration. You want to have a quick pull, but the vape cart’s not hitting or it crackles with zero vapor. It’s frustrating, but most clogs can be cleared in a minute or two. There are also steps you can take to prevent clogs from happening, including smarter storage and better cleaning routines.
Learn how easy it is to fix a clogged weed vape cartridge and how to keep it running smoothly for the next pull.
3 Common Causes of Clogs
- Thick oil. Potent extracts like live resin/rosin move slowly and can congeal in the airway.
- Cold temperature. Cold oil is thick oil. If you leave a cart in the cart or outside, clogs are far more likely to happen.
- Storage habits. Storing a cart on its side or upside down will let the oil seep into the mouthpiece. Pocket lint and dust will get trapped there and create the clog.
Quick Fixes for a Clogged Vape Cart
Before you try anything else, make sure your battery is charged and the cart is snug but not overtight. If that all looks good, you can try:
1. Warm the Cart Gently to Loosen Thick Oil
Cup the cartridge in your palms for 60 to 90 seconds or put it into a warm pocket for a few minutes to let your body heat do the work. The warmth loosens the thick oil, allowing it to flow back toward the coil. Don’t let it get too hot, though. Too much heat can ruin the terpenes or crack the tank.
2. Puff Without Power to Clear the Airway
Detach the cart from the battery. Take a few soft pulls without pressing the button. This can draw a thin film or a tiny oil bubble out of the airway and reset the airflow. Reattach the cart and try a 1- to 2-second low-temperature puff.
3. Use a Toothpick or Paperclip (Carefully) to Remove Blockages
If residue is blocking the mouthpiece, remove the tip (if you can) and gently clear visible buildup with a wooden toothpick.
For fixed tips, insert a clean, straightened paperclip just into the mouthpiece opening to dislodge any waxy film that may be present. Don’t force it down to the coil.
Wipe the tip with a cotton swab. If the oil has pooled around the 510 connection, dab it clean so the battery can make full contact.
How to Prevent Future Clogs in Vape Carts
Keep carts upright as much as possible. Standing them vertically helps the oil settle around the coil instead of in the airway. Avoid leaving your cart in the cold (such as in your car’s glove box) and refrain from storing it in direct sunlight or near heaters.
After sessions, clear the airway by taking one last short puff without firing. Every few days, wipe down the contact points with a dry cotton swab and clean the mouthpiece to remove dust or lint.
Remember to match the power of your vape to the product. You’ll want to use a lower voltage for live resin and rosin. High heat can char the oil and create more clogging residue.
