Fighting Fitness Fatigue with CBD

Fighting Fitness Fatigue with CBD

BY MARIE LODI

Daily exercise comes with a slew of physical and mental benefits, as we’ve known for a while now (though that knowledge doesn’t make it any easier to actually make it to the gym on the regular) But here’s even more motivation to sweat it out: new studies show that being sedentary is even deadlier than heart disease, smoking, and diabetes. Clearly, it’s time to get moving, if you haven’t already. Of course, that’s easier said than done, and those who exercise regularly know that a solid sweat session can involve some pain afterwards. So, what can we do to help us deal with the painful repercussions of a workout? Turn to CBD.

A successful workout might result in muscles so sore, you can barely walk the day after. Or, a simple movement like putting on your shoes may cause an unbearable, piercing pain. The reason why muscles hurt so much after a weekend hike or a bootcamp class is due to Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness. According to Dr. Warren Willey, D.O. an osteopathic physician and author of forthcoming book Obtainable: Enjoy the Body and Energy You’ve Always Wanted – Beyond Diet and Exercise, Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness, or DOMS, “results from microtears and small injuries to the muscles, along with products of metabolism that increase oxidative stress.” When those muscle fibers rebuild, your bodies gets stronger. Unfortunately, this is where the pain factor comes in. You’re not alone in your agony. From experienced athletes to workout novices in the process of beginning a fitness regimen, post-workout soreness can happen to everyone.

Workout recovery is dependent on what you do after your fitness routine. “Ensuring adequate building blocks of recovery such as adequate protein in your diet, a good antioxidant supplement and plenty of minerals, especially magnesium, all help to, at the very least, minimize DOMS,” says Dr. Willey. So, what else can you do to help your recovery process?

This is where CBD comes in. Since CBD binds to the TRPV1 pain receptor, it creates an anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving effect. Another great reason to use CBD for post-workout recovery: it comes in many different forms, meaning there’s truly something for everyone. Ahead, three effective formulations of CBD to consider for getting serious relief after your next exhausting spin class or grueling Pilates session.

CBD Drops
People who take CBD after a workout tend to find relief for their aches. It can also help those with chronic pain—so, if you’re still suffering from an old muscle injury, CBD is a great option. Prefer sublinguals? Try Care By Design 4:1 CBD Rich Drops. Just place the drops under your tongue, and let it absorb, rather than swallow. Soon, you’ll be feeling brand new.

CBD Capsules
Or, consider bracing for an exercise-spurred soreness by popping some CBD before even breaking a sweat. The antispasmodic effects of cannabidiol can help relax muscles, so taking a CBD capsule prior to a long run may help avoid a painful aftermath. Usually people ice their sore muscles or turn to over-the-counter drugs, such as NSAIDS (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs), to conquer pain. Opt for CBD in capsule form, such as Proof 20:1 Capsules. This high-CBD combo will fight muscle inflammation and can also help you get a good night’s sleep.

CBD Topicals
The intensely fragrant experience of an Icy Hot rubdown is a familiar go-to for alleviating aches,  but don’t rule out the soothing effects of a CBD topical. After an intense workout, simply massage aching muscles with a CBD-infused cream like Papa & Barkley Releaf Balm or throw on the brand’s CBD Releaf Patch. Want to moisturize your sore calves at the same time? Apothecanna’s Extra Strength Relieving Body Oil might just be what the doctor ordered.

So, the next time you are regretting your workout due to agonizing pain, skip the ibuprofen and turn to CBD. Then, pat yourself on the back for treating your body well with exercise.
