What Are Terpines & Why Do They Matter?

Pop open a fresh jar of flower and the smell should hit you before anything else. Cannabis can smell like anything from citrus peel to gasoline, and different users prefer different scents.  All of these gorgeous smells come from something called terpenes, and it’s a topic you’ll hear a lot about in cannabis culture. But what are terpenes? And how can they make two strains of cannabis with similar THC levels feel totally different?

Understanding what terpenes are and how they affect cannabis plants can help you shop smarter and get more pleasure out of every puff.

What Are Terpenes?

Terpenes are the molecules that give plants their smell, and cannabis plants can produce dozens of types of these molecules. Each strain of cannabis plant has its own terpene blend, called its terpene profile. Within the profile, there are usually two to five dominant terps, which are kind of like the top notes of a perfume. They are the scents that hit you first.

Terpenes don’t produce the same effect as THC. Instead, they shape how the cannabis smells and tastes. Terpenes give the cannabis its vibe, whether that’s bright and zesty or cozy and herbal.

Why Terpenes Matter in Cannabis

Terpenes give each strain its signature scent, so your experience starts even before you spark up. Different terpene profiles give each strain a distinct vibe or character. A citrus-leaning strain can feel bright and social, while a lavender one might feel cozier.

Once you notice which terp profiles you gravitate toward, it can make shopping less about chasing the highest THC number and more about choosing a strain that matches your plans and preferences.

Track the terps you love, and you can look for that same character in different formats. Flower for rituals, vapes for quick breaks, and an edible for longer sessions. You’ll have a profile you love and a feel that stays consistent.

5 Most Common Terpenes

Label formats can vary, but you’ll often see terpenes listed by percentage. These five show up frequently and are a great starting point to find your preferred terp profile:

1. Myrcene

This terp is herbal and musky, and can sometimes smell like a mango. You’ll also find it in basil, hops, and lemongrass. It gives cannabis a classic scent, and many people associate it with a laid-back feeling and flavorful smoke.

2. Limonene

No surprise, this terpene is zesty citrus, like lemon, orange, or grapefruit. You’ll actually find it in citrus rinds! It’s bright and lively on the palate, making it a go-to for social sessions and daytime needs. We love it for getting the weekend chores list done.

3. Caryophyllene

Complex name, complex aroma. Caryophyllene smells like spices, such as pepper or cloves. You’ll find the same terpene molecules in those spices, along with cinnamon. Cannabis with high caryophyllene percentages can feel warming and are great with savory snacks or after-dinner hangouts.

4. Pinene

This terpene is like pine needles, fresh-cut wood, and rosemary. You’ll find it in many herbs. It’s clean and crisp, and many people like this terpene for daytime walks or creative breaks. It’s great for outdoor sessions.

5. Linalool

Linalool is a flowery terpene that smells like lavender or lilac. You’ll also find it in mint plants. It’s gentle and has a spa-like scent that’s perfect for evening wind-downs in the bath or while listening to a mellow playlist.

How to Read Terpene Profiles on Products

  1. Find the terp section on the label. Many licensed products list a total percentage, along with the top few terpenes by name.
  2. Note the top two or three terpenes. These are the main drivers of scent and flavor.
  3. Look at the total terpene %. Numbers around 1-3% are common, but some batches run higher or lower. More isn’t necessarily better, but it can tell you how intense the aroma and taste will be.
  4. Compare it with the THC/CBD. A 22% THC strain with terps you love can be much more enjoyable than a dry 40% batch that smells flat. Terps and cannabinoids work together to give the experience.

Keep track of what terps appear in the products you love. You’ll start to see a pattern emerge and can use that info to dial in your cannabis preferences for the next trip to the dispensary. Try those same terps in a different format and see how they compare.

Choosing Cannabis Based on Terpenes

Use the scents you like and the moments you are planning to guide your picks at the counter. For example:

  • Daytime and errands: Go for limonene-forward profiles with a touch of pinene. This should smell zesty and bright, like citrus peel and pine. These strains can feel more breezy and social, great for meetups, closet clean-outs, or a stroll through a farmer’s market.
  • Pre-dinner catch-ups: Reach for blends that pair limonene and caryophyllene. It’s citrusy with a peppery snap, lively enough for appetizers and conversation without being overpowering.
  • Evening wind-downs: For quiet nights, myrcene and linalool make a soothing duo. The herbal lavender smells are perfect for candles, a cup of tea, and soft music.

MedMen’s shelves are broad and deep, so you’ll find these terp profiles in a variety of formats, from terp-forward carts to silky smooth chocolates. You can find a format that works best for you, regardless of your preferred terpene.
